Welcome

This site is for students at Coast Mountain College (CMTN) to help them navigate some of the learnings that come with being a new student at CMTN. This resource was made for students and by students in Business Communications classes in the Fall 2022 semester. Each class was tasked with organizing themselves, choosing the topic and creating deadlines for a submission. Originally students were given access to the site to edit and include their materials but once access was provided to the first ten students the only resource that was here originally ( a page about emailing your instructors professional with templates for students) was deleted. Nobody claimed responsibility for this and that resource was not replaced as of the 2022 fall update.

About our process:

Three classes were tasked with the same assignment. To create a resource for first time students at CMTN.

Our Wednesday morning class focused on APA formatting and guiding students towards mastery of this in their studies. This came from the recognition that different instructors were giving different advice about formatting and they wanted a standard created for instructors as well (while recognizing instructors may have their own reasons to create changes from APA standards). It was decided that we needed one person to input into the site and the instructor volunteered. This created some issues with timing. The instructor was not able to get the information in the site in a timely manner and this meant the materials were posted exactly as submitted no final editing has been done after the course was complete. The self organization of this group was impressive. There were 2-3 leaders in the class who participated fully in the planning and one of these students acted as the facilitator at the front of the class taking notes and organizing the ideas of the class. They put themselves into groups of 4-5 students and created deadlines that were mostly adhered to.

Our Thursday morning class created a resource for students who were joining the CMTN community in Terrace as International students and they created information that would help students as soon as their plane landed in Terrace BC.

Our Thursday morning class decided to create a resource about transportation in Terrace BC which can be challenging as a student without a vehicle in this city. This group can be characterized as not productive. The task was provided and a person who had website experience took the role of the leader in the class but rather than choose a topic they were facilitating the group towards processes such as brainstorming, processing and management of the plan. This person then never returned in the subsequent classes where students were given extra time to come up with their topics and self organize. This first session was a set back but the class persevered and near the end of the semester they were committed to having their materials uploaded. Due to the technical issues where a page was deleted, this group chose to have one student receive and upload the work to their page. By all accounts the work was being done by the groups, again this class had chosen to create groups of 4-5 students. The deadline came and went and no upload transpired and no rationale was provided.
